The project is comprised of two, 125,000-square foot, 3-story office buildings which serve as the corporate headquarters in one building and the headquarters for Cubic Transportation Systems in the other. The project is on the existing Cubic campus in the Kearny Mesa area of San Diego, CA, and modernized Cubic’s office and R&D space and consolidated its workforce in San Diego onto one main campus.
The development process commenced in 2018 when Jones Lang LaSalle, on behalf of Cubic, ran a Request for Proposals process for development services and Cisterra was selected along with team members Ware Malcomb as the architect and Whiting-Turner as the general contractor. Cisterra immediately engaged the team in the design, permitting, pricing and coordination of the project working closely with Cubic to plan the construction activities on the continuously-operating campus, which includes significant utility relocation, grade changes, traffic realignment, and temporary facilities in order to meet the tight schedule for completion. Included in the project is the demolition of an existing outdated building to make way for the new buildings.
Along with the two new building, the campus renovations include landscaped areas including properly sized detention basins and a new parking lot that includes a field of solar panels as well as electric vehicle charging stations, which add a significant ‘green’ component to the project. Additionally, the campus incorporates new amenity areas including a basketball court, numerous outdoor gathering and meeting spaces, as well as a new café and fitness center.
